Custom Orthotics in ottawa

Custom orthotics are orthopedic devices that are designed to align the foot and ankle into a corrective and optimal position. They look like insoles, but because they are a biomechanical medical appliance that are custom-made to your feet, they help re-align the foot by correcting certain imbalances. Just like glasses work on your eyes, custom orthotics work on your feet to reduce stress and unnecessary strain on your entire body. Custom orthotics fit into your shoes as comfortably as insoles and are personalized from the precise imprints of your feet.

Who needs custom orthotics?

Custom orthotics can help alleviate pain and fatigue from the feet to the spine. Improper biomechanics when standing, moving, and walking can affect our everyday tasks. In order to remain pain free, our body requires a solid base. While our feet are the foundation of our body, certain conditions such as high arches, joint stiffness and loss of metatarsal padding can affect our entire stance and movement. Problems with our body’s foundation can quickly translate into problems with our muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons and bones.

What conditions can custom orthotics help with:

  • Foot and ankle discomforts
  • Diabetic foot ulcers
  • Pronation
  • Supination
  • Knee pain
  • Back pain
  • Hip and pelvic pain
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • High arches
  • Flat feet
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Bunions
  • Athletes and runners

Why choose us?

At Natural Sole Wellness Centre, we understand that custom-made orthotics are not a small purchase, and that is why we offer custom-made appointments. We offer an initial assessment with our Doctor of Chiropractic which includes a full biomechanical exam, gait scan, analysis and diagnosis. Once the assessment is completed, our Chiropractor will determine which orthotic is right for you based on your everyday lifestyle and treatment goals. Our Chiropractor will then proceed in doing a foam casting of your feet. The casting imprints are then sent to the lab to create your personalized orthotics. Once your custom orthotics are received, you are booked for a fitting appointment.

Will my orthotics cause me to lose muscle tone?

Custom orthotics will not reduce muscle tone, instead, they help position your feet in a corrective position so you will be using the right muscles at the right time. This helps reduce fatigue and allows your muscles to be used more efficiently.

Do I need a prescription for my insurance?

You don’t need a prescription to book an appointment with us. However, most insurance companies require a physician’s prescription including the diagnosis/the reason you need orthotics. Many insurance companies cover a certain percentage of the cost of the orthotic. You must always verify with your private insurance company if the product/service is covered and to what amount. Every policy or package is different, and it is impossible for us to determine the amount of your coverage. If you don’t have private health insurance, you can claim your purchase on your income taxes as a medical purchase.

The Gait Scan

Nature has it, we take our feet for granted. Most of us walk without putting to much thoughts to it. Although our ability to walk may seem very basic, it is the utter most complex and important function that are body can accomplish. Losing our mobility can be life changing. The gait cycle (when a person walks) is measured from heel strike to heel strike involving multiple musculoskeletal groups, dynamic functions, lower limb movements, kinetics, patterns, etc. While every text book describes the human gait into a perfect and detailed stance phase and swing phase, we know that in real life, things aren’t always perfect. Many people can move around with abnormalities and asymmetrical gait patterns without ever knowing until they experience a sudden pain or injury. Such conditions can lead to greater disturbance of the gait cycle leading to bigger health concerns. When our mobility is affected, we are entirely affected, from our physical health to our mental health to our social lifestyle. This is why we offer a gait analysis so we can understand how our bodies react to walking, running and moving, and to allow us to diagnose any possible concerns that may be causing pain, to prevent injuries from happening, and to evaluate current treatment plans to ensure that they are working correctly.

At Natural Sole Wellness Centre, we are proud to offer gait analysis with the revolutionary state-of-the-art Gait Scan Technology. The Gait Scan is an innovative diagnostic device that allows your health care practitioner to analyze your biomechanics and gait. This digital scan is the industry’s leading in-depth method in evaluating your gait cycle in the most dynamic way, which would simply not be possible with the naked eye. It provides a detailed visual of your biomechanical assessment, possible painful pressure points, and insight of your foot’s function. The Gait Scan can also help with:

  • Identifying and addressing biomechanical concerns
  • Assessing and improving athletic performance
  • Assessing and evaluating treatment plan response (orthotics, exercise-plan, etc.)
  • Diagnosing and assessing plantar ulceration risk
  • Evaluating response to offloading devices
  • Designing and customizing custom orthotic products

With both diagnostic and educational capabilities, the GaitScan™ provides a comprehensive biomechanical evaluation to help you reach your treatment goals. Call us today to book your complete assessment.
