Support & Solutions for Lymphedema and Lipedema

At Natural Skin & Sole Wellness Clinic, we recognize that many individuals experience persistent swelling, heaviness, or unusual changes in their limbs without ever receiving a formal diagnosis. If you’ve been told your symptoms are “just weight-related” or “not urgent,” but your legs, or body still feel different, painful, or swollen, you are not alone.

We specialize in the management of lymphedema and lipedema with specialized garments. As a Registered Nurse, Level 3 Vodder Certified Lymphedema Therapist, and certified compression garment fitter, our clinic owner Sarab Dormani provides compassionate, expert care tailored to your unique needs.

What We Offer: A Caring, Clinical Approach

At Natural Skin & Sole, we don’t just sell garments, we guide and educate you!

1. Nursing Consultation & Lower Limb Assessment

During your visit, Sarab takes a very detailed health history, evaluates your symptoms, and performs an assessment. This helps determine whether your swelling may be due to lipedema, lymphedema, venous insufficiency, or other causes.

2. Compression Therapy Education

You’ll learn how compression garments, such as socks, wraps, bandages, or leggings may help reduce swelling, relieve pain, and prevent progression. We explain the differences in compression levels (15–20 mmHg to 30–40 mmHg), and whether you may benefit from light, moderate, or high-grade compression.

3. Custom Garment Fitting & Ordering

Once we determine your needs, we measure you professionally and provide options based on comfort, lifestyle, and clinical goals. We work with reputable brands and offer styles suitable for everyday wear, travel, work, and medical needs. If you don’t have a prescription, with your permission we will reach out to your primary care provider and request one along with a detailed assessment.

4. Ongoing Support & Monitoring

Compression therapy is not one-size-fits-all. We check in with you, adjust as needed, and ensure you’re supported throughout your journey, even if you’re waiting for or seeking a diagnosis from another healthcare provider.

5. Referral to Community Partners & Collaborative Reporting

When appropriate, we coordinate your care by referring you to trusted community partners, including nurse practitioners, physiotherapists, massage therapist or any other health care provider for further assessment. We also provide a comprehensive, clinically detailed report outlining your assessment findings and compression treatment plan, which can be sent directly to your family physician or primary care provider. This ensures continuity of care, supports insurance coverage, and helps your broader healthcare team stay informed and aligned with your goals.

*Please note that at this time, we provide care specifically for garments related to lower extremity lipedema and lymphedema.

Could It Be Lymphedema or Lipedema?

Many people suffer silently with these conditions for years. Here’s how to tell if you might benefit from an assessment:

Possible Signs of Lipedema:

  • Symmetrical enlargement of the legs or hips, but feet are unaffected

  • Tender, painful fatty tissue that bruises easily

  • Feeling heavy or fatigued in the legs, despite normal activity

  • Trouble losing fat in affected areas, even with diet and exercise

Possible Signs of Lymphedema:

  • Persistent swelling, usually in one limb, but may be both

  • Skin tightness or “sleeve” feeling around an arm or leg

  • Indentations (pitting) when you press on the skin

  • Chronic swelling of the legs for over 3-6 months
  • History of surgeries, infections, wounds, cancer or family members with similar symptoms

If these descriptions resonate with you, you may be dealing with more than just poor circulation or weight gain. Early identification is key to preventing progression and maintaining quality of life. If you are unsure of what’s causing your swelling, feeling dismissed by past healthcare encounters, looking for conservative options before pursuing further medical interventionor living with a suspected condition and seeking symptom relief, then don’t hesitate to give us a call at 613-761-6060 to book your detailed consultation with our Registered Nurse.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are compression garments covered by private insurance benefits?

Most third party insurance plans cover compression stockings. Some cover a percentage while other offer an amount. Most insurance companies will cover up to 6-8 pairs/ calendar year. You must verify the details of your plan as all plans are different. Some plans only cover medical grade strength while most coverage plans require a doctor’s prescription and a diagnosis.

Why should I wear compression garments?

For people living with lymphedema or lipedema, compression garments are an important part of care. They apply gentle pressure that improves circulation, supports the lymphatic system, and helps move excess fluid out of the legs. This reduces swelling, eases heaviness and discomfort, improves mobility, and may help slow or prevent progression of the condition.

What compression level should I wear?

The right compression level depends on your condition, symptoms, and medical needs. For lymphedema and lipedema, higher levels of compression are often required compared to standard “support socks.” Our Registered Nurse will assess your swelling, circulation, and overall health to recommend the most appropriate level for you. Wearing the correct compression ensures effectiveness, comfort, and safety. Important: The right compression level should always be determined through a professional assessment to ensure safety and effectiveness.

What is mmHg

The mmHg stands for millimeters of mercury. This is how the pressure in the compression sock is measure. The higher the number, the higher the pressure. Compression garments use graduated pressure, meaning they are tightest at the ankle (100% pressure), less snug at the calf (about 70%), and lighter at the thigh (about 40%). This design helps improve blood flow and move fluid upward toward the heart.

Can compression garments be stylish?

Yes! Custom compression garments don’t have to be plain or boring. Our partner brands offer a variety of colors and styles, so you can choose a look that feels more personal while still getting the medical support you need. You can discuss these options during your appointment with our Nurse.

How often should garments be replaced?

Compression garments should generally be replaced every 6 months. Over time, the fabric loses its elasticity, which reduces the effectiveness of the compression. Replacing them regularly ensures you continue to get the right level of support and the best results for managing lymphedema or lipedema.

Can I wear my compression socks at night?

Standard daytime compression socks are not meant to be worn while sleeping, as they are designed for activity and upright posture. For nighttime, we offer specialized night garments that are specifically designed to be safe and effective while you rest. These help manage swelling comfortably overnight and complement your daytime compression routine.

I can't put my compression socks on, what should I do?

It is important to understand why you cannot wear your compression socks. Where they purchased many years ago and don’t fit? Where you not properly fitted and measured for them? Did your previous fitter teach you proper wear and removal techniques? Do you require a donning device? In any case, our Nurse can help you better understand this.

Who should not wear compression therapy?

There are conditions to which compression garments can be harmful and dangerous. Conditions such as, but not limited too; peripheral arterial disease, uncontrolled congestive heart failure, sepsis, wound infections and neuropathy should not be wearing compression socks. This is why it is important to receive an medical assessment prior to purchasing compression garments.

Are Medical Compression Stockings exempt from HST?

Medical compression stockings are HST exempt when a written order or prescription by a medical practitioner is provided.

Do I need a Doctor’s referral?

Because they are used for the treatment of different medical conditions, medical compression stockings of 20mmHg or higher need to be prescribed by your Family Doctor. Having a medical prescription may also facilitate your coverage with your insurance company.

Do you offer mobile visits?

Our Nurse offers residential / long term care facilities visits for garment assessment and product order. There is an assessment fee and travel fee related to mobile visits. Please call the clinic at 613-761-6060 or e-mail at info@naturalsolewellness.ca for booking details.
